Recently, ASJ Partners has received inquiries about how to reach and motivate the Generation Y-age Workers who have come to be known as Millennial Workers (MWs).

These young members of the work force seem to have different needs and requirements than the more established work force, and as a result, they will not only respond differently to a staffing firm’s typical marketing strategy but also invariably respond differently to an employer.

This is a two-fold problem.

With a little insight, however, it is not a difficult one to solve from a marketing point of view. In fact, the strategies are pretty much the same, with heavy emphasis placed on communication.

Tips to help a staffing firm market jobs to MWs and help market MWs as candidates to employers:

1. Clarify job expectations in the interview and use relevant examples, especially regarding productivity. MWs are not used to “at-desk” time like older counterparts might be.
2. Discuss how the MWs may interact with other employees in their jobs. These folks are used to being social and in groups.
3. Tell the MWs how their work contributes to the organization as a whole, or how they help to make a difference. Recognition and referral programs can help.
4. Keep lines of communication open. Render praise often because it will help motivate MWs.
5. Propose team projects where possible. MWs like the social and mental activity associated with teams.
6. Assign mentors to build relationships, demonstrate the big picture and provide feedback. MWs like to know they are heard and can have questions answered.
7. Within allowable boundaries, permit as much individual innovation and flexibility as possible. They have been raised with technology at their fingertips and won’t hesitate to use it for job or personal needs. Make sure to have policies in place.
